Iowa beef from a named family farm

Our farm is near Red Oak in Southwest Iowa, not in Des Moines. Six generations of the Mundorf family have carried forward a farming story that began in 1873. Ordering from us connects you directly with that source, whether you start with a box of steaks or ask Jeff to help plan a custom-cut beef share.

Our Angus cattle are pasture raised and grass fed, then finished with grain, including corn. We describe the finishing diet plainly because grass-fed and exclusively grass-finished beef are not interchangeable purchases. The same care applies to aging: reserve steaks and shares are aged up to 21 days, while our single-source ground beef is aged for 14 days.

For Des Moines buyers, local origin and convenient fulfillment are separate questions. An Iowa farm can be the right source without being a nearby retail counter. Read our farming story, compare the actual products, and confirm whether shipping or an arranged farm pickup best fits your order.

A quarter, half, or whole cow: start with the complete price

A deposit makes a large share easier to reserve, but it should never be mistaken for the total cost. Our quarter share is $1,250 total with $500 down; a half is $2,350 with $800 down; a whole is $4,697 with $1,200 down. All three deposits are nonrefundable under their current product terms.

The listed custom-cut quantities are approximately 100, 200, and 400 pounds respectively. Divide the total by the approximate weight to create a planning comparison, then ask about delivery costs and confirm the final order terms. This produces a more useful budget than comparing the deposit to a grocery-store receipt.

Do not compare those packaged quantities with another farm's hanging-weight quote without accounting for cutting, trimming, processing charges, and the beef you actually receive. If an offer leaves those items unclear, get the missing details before deciding which price is lower.

Our half-cow price guide explains the buying decision in more depth. For a broad view of the available sizes, visit the Iowa beef-share comparison. The product listing remains the place to confirm current availability and reserve your chosen share.

CUSTOM-CUT BEEF SHARES

Compare quarter, half, and whole beef

Buying bulk beef for Des Moines? Compare the complete listed price with the amount due to reserve. These are approximate custom-cut quantities, not hanging-weight quotes. Delivery arrangements for shares must be confirmed with Jeff.

Listed beef prices checked September 17, 2026
Share Approx. beef Total price Deposit Planning cost/lb*
Quarter beef 100 lb $1,250 $500 $12.50
Half beef 200 lb $2,350 $800 $11.75
Whole beef 400 lb $4,697 $1,200 $11.74

*Illustrative calculation: total listed price divided by advertised approximate pounds. Actual cut yield varies. This is not a guaranteed per-pound quote and does not add any applicable shipping, delivery, or tax. Deposits are nonrefundable and count toward the listed total. Confirm current prices and availability on each product page.

A share is worth planning around the cuts you use, not just this arithmetic. Choose a quarter for a smaller custom supply, a half for a larger household or an agreed split, and a whole only when the storage, budget, and cooking plan support it. Explore our Iowa beef-share guide before reserving.

Custom cuts should follow your cooking habits

Before filling out a cut sheet, write a short list of meals your household cooks repeatedly. Ground beef for quick dinners, roasts for slower meals, and steaks for the grill all belong in that conversation. The point of custom cutting is to build a useful assortment, not to choose unfamiliar cuts just because the names sound impressive.

We send the cut sheet as harvest approaches and can help you understand the choices. Think about steak thickness, roast size, and the number of people you usually serve. Some cutting choices compete with others, so ask Jeff to explain the tradeoff instead of assuming every steak, roast, and specialty cut can all be maximized.

Our half and whole share listings also allow bones, organ meat, and tallow by special request. Bring those preferences up while planning the order. Read how to fill out a beef cut sheet and what happens after a reservation before choosing a harvest date.

Des Moines delivery or a planned trip to Red Oak

For boxed beef, the shipping policy is straightforward: frozen orders in insulated packaging with coolant, dispatched Monday through Wednesday. Most arrive one to three business days after shipment. Enter a Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale, or other exact address at checkout for the relevant shipping options and charges.

For a share, plan farther ahead. Product information places pickup at approximately 25 to 30 days after harvest, after aging and processing are complete. Jeff arranges pickup at the farm or delivery. Confirm dates and the specific arrangement before planning time away from work or assuming there is a regular Des Moines drop point.

A farm pickup is an appointment, not an invitation to arrive unannounced. Coordinate when the beef is ready, how much space the packages require, and how you will transport it. If a trip does not fit your schedule, ask about fulfillment to your address before paying the deposit.

You do not have to buy a share to buy from an Iowa farm. The sampler, ground beef, and reserve steak box offer smaller starting points. They also let you try our beef while making a longer-term freezer plan, without confusing a standard boxed order with a future harvest reservation.

Des Moines beef delivery questions

Can I buy Mundorf beef for delivery to Des Moines?

Yes. Our boxed beef ships under a policy covering the continental United States, including Des Moines. Enter your address at checkout for available options. Larger beef shares use an agreed harvest and fulfillment plan, so speak with Jeff if you need a particular delivery or pickup arrangement.

Where is the Mundorf farm in Iowa?

Our family farm is near Red Oak in Southwest Iowa. We are not a Des Moines storefront or butcher counter. Customers can order boxed beef online, while farm pickup for shares is arranged directly when the order is ready. Confirm an appointment before traveling to the farm.

How much does a quarter cow cost?

The Quarter Beef Share is $1,250 total for approximately 100 pounds of custom-cut beef. A $500 nonrefundable deposit reserves the share. The remaining listed beef balance is $750; confirm current terms and any delivery charges before ordering rather than treating the deposit as the entire price.

How much does a half cow cost?

Our Half Beef Share lists $2,350 total for approximately 200 pounds of custom-cut Angus beef. The $800 nonrefundable deposit is part of that total, leaving $1,550 of listed beef cost. Review the current product page for availability and discuss fulfillment costs for your address.

How much does a whole cow cost?

The Whole Beef Share is $4,697 total with a $1,200 nonrefundable deposit, for approximately 400 pounds of custom-cut beef. It is a substantial freezer purchase, so plan storage, cut preferences, and fulfillment before reserving. The remaining listed beef balance is $3,497 before any applicable extras.

Is processing included in the number shown here?

The figures on this page are the total share prices published on Mundorf product listings, not a hanging-weight rate multiplied here. Before comparing another quote, confirm its processing fees, expected packaged weight, and delivery costs. Ask Jeff to clarify anything in the complete Mundorf order that is unclear.

Can I customize a quarter cow as well as a half?

Yes. Our quarter, half, and whole share listings offer custom cutting. We send a cut sheet ahead of the harvest date and work with you on the selection. Tell us how you cook and ask about tradeoffs among steaks, roasts, and ground beef before finalizing instructions.

When is a reserved share ready for pickup?

The share listings describe pickup approximately 25 to 30 days after harvest. Aging and processing happen before that handoff. A locker or harvest date is not the same as your collection date, and the one-to-three-business-day boxed shipping estimate does not replace this production timeline.

Can you deliver to the Des Moines suburbs?

Use the exact address at checkout for boxed orders; our shipping policy covers the continental United States rather than a single city radius. For share orders to West Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale, or another community, confirm delivery arrangements and costs directly before reserving.

Is this grass-fed beef or corn-fed beef?

Our cattle are pasture raised and grass fed, then grain finished with corn included in their diet. That makes a simple either-or label incomplete. We do not claim exclusively grass-finished beef. Read our farming practices and compare them with your own preferences before choosing an order.

Do I need to buy in bulk to try your beef?

No. The First Taste Sampler provides three steak cuts and three pounds of ground beef for $89 at the current listed price. You can also choose the reserve steak box or ground beef product. These smaller orders are separate from a custom-cut share reservation.

What information should I send before reserving?

Tell Jeff your ZIP code, the share size you are considering, your preferred timing, and whether you want farm pickup or delivery. Include questions about freezer space or custom cuts. Sorting out those details first makes the reservation and later cut-sheet conversation much clearer.
