Our Family's Heritage

George Logan Mundorf began fattening livestock for market in the 1870’s not long after he purchased his first eighty acres in 1873. Growing his operation rapidly, G.L. was soon shipping hundreds of animals to the Union Stockyards in Chicago Illinois. G.L. and his crew would drive the cattle ten miles to the railyard in nearby Griswold, Iowa where they were loaded onto “stock cars”, bound for Chicago, 400 miles away. 

Our Family’s Heritage

Once unloaded in Chicago the cattle would be penned and fed by a “stock agent” a seller representative charged with negotiating the price with the local beef slaughterhouses surrounding the stockyards in. Once a price was agreed upon, the cattle would be driven on foot to the winning bidder’s slaughterhouse. They would then be processed into the finest beef on earth and shipped to steakhouses and butcher shops across the eastern United States.

Our Family's Heritage

Sometime in the early part of the twentieth century G.L.’s son, George Walker switched to selling cattle at the nearby Omaha Stockyards. As a young boy I (Jeff) remember walking across the boardwalks elevated above the stockyards there over forty years ago. Plank board pens full of cattle stretched out below far into the distance. Cowboys moved cattle horseback in and out of pens and to the surrounding packinghouses much the same as a hundred years prior in Chicago during my great-great grandfather’s era.

Our Family's Heritage

It was a dying remnant of a golden era of livestock production in the Midwest, and I am grateful that I got to witness it. My father, Gary and I sold cattle at the Omaha Stockyards until the late 1990’s. They are gone now, as are most of the small family farm feeders that used to supply America with beef.

How are your cattle raised?

At Mundorf Heritage Beef, our cattle are pasture-raised in a rotational grazing system where they graze various grasses and legumes. During their first winter, calves are fed free choice home-raised hay and a limited amount of corn. Our cattle are fattened on a rotational grazing system of forage supplemented by a modest amount of corn to maximize the flavor and marbling of the beef. We believe in providing a stress-free environment to ensure the health and well-being of our animals, which translates into the best quality beef for your family.

Is your beef USDA processed?

Yes, all of our beef is USDA inspected and processed to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety. Each cut is vacuum-sealed to lock in freshness, so you can enjoy premium beef with confidence when it arrives at your door.
